A key UNHCR function is interviewing asylum seekers in order to listen to, understand and learn the reasons why they have left their country of origin and to decide whether or not they meet the criteria laid out in the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees. Interviewing and eliciting the right information in order to present a well documented and well reasoned case is a challenging risk.
This video has been developed by the Protection Support and Oversight Section of the Department of International Protection in 2000 to provide staff with an opportunity to reflect on interviewing techniques and the difficulties encountered in conducting refugee status determination. It is intended as a training tool for initiating discussion and exchanging ideas on the challenges faced in making decisions on which the future of individuals’ lives depend.
The video has been inspired by cases from different countries. Any similarity with one particular case should be seen as purely coincidental. The people who have participated in it as actors and actresses have very kindly given their time and support to its production. They have assumed assigned roles and developed them in order to enable maximum learning opportunities for viewers of this training tool. None of their statements reflect in any way UNHCR’s official view or position.
